Toothbrushing

Tooth brushing should begin as soon as the first tooth erupts in your baby's mouth (approx 6 months age). Using either a small soft toothbrush or a facewasher with NO toothpaste to be used until your child is 18months-2years. Then a ‘smear amount' of an infant toothpaste can be introduced (ie Milk Teeth - Macleans or My First Toothpaste - Colgate). As these have a mild flavour and a lower fluoride concentration. This toothpaste should be used until your child reaches the age of 6 years, when they will then develop a ‘spit' reflex.

Toothbrushing is easier when it is made ‘fun', like in the bath, let them have a ‘brush' however it is recommended that an adult brushes their teeth until the age of 6 years, as prior to this they do not have the manual dexterity.

Electric V's Manual

The advantage of an electric toothbrush is often they have ‘in-built timers', which encourages children to brush for the recommended time of 2 minutes. However if they are both used efficiently, neither brush ‘cleans teeth' better than the other!
